Revised UK ENIC comparisons for Indian Bachelor degrees
As of September 2025, UK ENIC will assess most Bachelor degrees from India as follows:
- 3 years/120+ credits i: UK Bachelor degree
- 4+ years/160+ credits ii: UK Bachelor (Honours) degree
The durations in question relate to full-time study, or part-time equivalent. Credit refers to the National Higher Education Qualifications Framework (NHEQF) academic credit framework, which has been implemented by some institutions.
The duration-based approach reflects the in-country benchmarking that was formalised in 2023. Specifically, three-year degrees are aligned to level 5.5 on the NHEQF, while four-year degrees are placed at level 6.
UK ENIC’s revised comparisons are therefore consistent with the categories and hierarchy that have been established in India.
However, the difference between levels 5.5 and 6 is of course a subtle one. And this nuance is mirrored in the revised comparisons, as UK Bachelor degrees with and without Honours both correspond to FHEQ iii level 6.
Degrees comparable to a UK ‘Bachelor degree’ may still therefore be suitable preparation for UK postgraduate study, at institutional discretion.
Previously, UK ENIC differentiated between degrees in professional versus non-professional subjects.
i) Excluding the postgraduate Bachelor of Laws.
ii) Excluding a handful of specific titles with their own database entries, such as the Bachelor of Education and Bachelor degrees in medicine/dentistry/veterinary science.
iii) The Frameworks for Higher Education Qualifications of UK Degree-Awarding Bodies.
