Accessibility Statement for UK ENIC

This accessibility statement applies to www.enic.org.uk.

This website is run by UK ENIC. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means that you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings.
  • zoom in up to 400% without the text overlapping for most content.
  • navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software.
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver).

We have also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet (opens in a new tab) has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • The password reset functionality cannot be accessed using only a keyboard.
  • There are accessibility issues with our live chat, including loss of content and functionality when viewing the chat in landscape orientation or zooming in past 200%.
  • We are aware that most older PDF documents are not fully accessible with screen reader software.
  • Some interactive elements are not fully accessible to people using assistive technology.
  • Some images do not have appropriate text alternatives.
  • Some content does not have sufficient contrast with its background.
  • Some headings are not marked up or have the wrong level.
  • Some error messages do not identify what the cause of the error is and how to fix it.
  • Some information such as error messages or labels is not associated with input fields.

A full listing of known issues with our web pages that may affect users with disabilities is available below under non-accessible content.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

UK ENIC is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 (opens in a new tab) AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with accessibility regulations

Images and non-text content

There are informative and functional images that have an inappropriate or missing text alternative for assistive technology users. There are decorative images that do not convey information but can be navigated to with assistive technology. (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.1.1).

Some text in the live chat is displayed as an image of text instead of as actual text (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.5).

Colour and contrast

Colour is relied on to distinguish between messages in the live chat (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.1).

The colour scheme on the website does not provide sufficient contrast for some text against the background (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.3).

The input field boundary and some interactive icons in the live chat, the loading icon when logging in and the keyboard focus indicators on some elements do not have sufficient contrast against their backgrounds (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.11).

Layout and Appearance

Some content and functionality are lost in the live chat when it is viewed on a device in landscape orientation (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.3.4).

Some content and functionality are lost in the live chat when zooming in to 200% or greater (WCAG 2.2 success criteria 1.4.4, 1.4.10).

Page and content structure

Some text is displayed visually as a heading, list or block quotation but is not marked up as such for assistive technology. Some headings have levels that do not accurately reflect the structure of the content. (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.3.1).

Reading order

Some elements are not in a logical reading order when accessed with assistive technology. When the live chat is open, it is possible to navigate to content behind it with a screen reader on a mobile device (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.3.2).

Keyboard navigation

Some interactive elements are not keyboard focusable, including the “Forgotten Password?” link on the “Sign In” page (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.1.1).

Some elements that are not interactive can be focused with the keyboard. Keyboard focus is not placed in a logical location on the page when the live chat is opened or dismissed (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.3).

The live chat pop-up can appear on top of the element that is currently focused with the keyboard, which hides the current focus location (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.11).

Form controls

Some form fields are not associated with their visual labels, relevant error messages or instructions. Some groups of form fields are not associated with their group labels (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.3.1).

Some form fields that collect information about the user are not set up to autocomplete with the relevant information (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.3.5).

Navigating to pages on the site

The following web pages can only be reached by a single navigation route (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.5):

Skip links

On some pages, skip links do not place the keyboard focus on a logical element on the page (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.1).

Error messages

Some error messages do not have an appropriate announcement to notify assistive technology users that they have occurred (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 3.3.1).

Some error messages do not identify what the cause of the error is and how to fix it (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 3.3.3).

Interactive components

Some interactive controls are identified to assistive technology with a name that does not contain the text that is displayed on the page (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.5.3).

Some interactive controls are identified to assistive technology with a name that could be misleading or confusing. The name used to identify the input field for the live chat is not correctly implemented and may not work for all assistive technologies. Some interactive controls do not have a role that identifies to assistive technology what kind of control they are or do not communicate information to assistive technology about their current state. (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 4.1.2).

Status messages

Some messages or icons that update users visually about the results of their actions are not automatically presented to assistive technology users (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 4.1.3).

PDF documents

Some PDFs are not fully accessible because they are images of text rather than actual text. Assistive technology cannot interact with PDFs for this reason (WCAG 2.2 success criteria 1.1.1, 1.3.1, 1.4.5).

We plan to review these issues by December 2025.

These PDFs include:

Member Hub specific issues

In addition to the above, the members area of our website is not compliant for the following reasons:

Images and non-text content

There are decorative images that do not convey information but can be navigated to with assistive technology (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.1.1).

Colour and contrast

The colour scheme on the website does not provide sufficient contrast for some text against the background (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.3).

There is functional non-text content in tooltips, informative non-text content in graphs, custom focus indication and custom boundaries on form input fields which do not have sufficient contrast with their background (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.11).

Layout and Appearance

Some content and functionality is lost when zooming in to 200% or greater (WCAG 2.2 success criteria 1.4.4).

Page and content structure

Some text is displayed visually as a heading, table header, unordered list or description list but is not marked up as such for assistive technology. Some headings have levels that do not accurately reflect the structure of the content. There is one instance of a malformed unordered list. (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.3.1).

Multimedia

There is a video which lacks an audio description or transcript (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.2.5).

Keyboard navigation

Some links and interactive tooltips are not focusable with keyboard. Some same-page links do not move focus when activated (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.1.1).

Some interactive elements have no visible focus indicator (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.7).

Form controls

Some form fields are not associated with their visual label or with their instructions (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.3.1).

Interactive components

Some interactive elements do not have an appropriate accessible name. Some interactive controls do not have a role that identifies to assistive technology what kind of control they are. There are tooltips with incorrectly defined ARIA for assistive technology. (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 4.1.2).

There are tooltips which cannot be dismissed without moving the mouse pointer and where it is not possible to move the mouse pointer over the tooltip contents without it being dismissed. (WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.13).

Disproportionate burden

We have assessed that fixing the issues with the following components would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations:

What we are doing to improve accessibility

We have conducted an audit with AbilityNet in June 2025. We will work with them to retest the site after suggested amendments have been made.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 30 March 2025. It was last reviewed on 04 August 2025.

This website was last tested on 16 to 30 June 2025. The test was carried out by AbilityNet.

22 pages were selected to be audited, representing important site functionality and pages that contain different representative types of components. Pages were tested against WCAG 2.2 A & AA on Windows desktop with Mozilla Firefox and the NVDA screen reader, and on mobile using an iPhone with VoiceOver.
